Resort Info

Why Barèges (Grand Tourmalet)?

  • Authentic Pyrenean Village
  • The largest ski area in the Pyrenees
  • Iconic descents such as Le Tourmalet and Pic Du Midi on your doorstep
  • Gladed runs in the beautiful ‘Ski Forest’
  • The healing waters of “Ciéleo” the spa and wellbeing centre

Barèges, located at 1,250m, is an authentic Pyrenean village within “Le Domaine Du Grand Tourmalet”, the Pyrenees’ largest ski area. A small and intimate village with the River Bastan running through it, its reputation is built upon the healing powers of its waters. Today Barèges combines excellent summer activities and healing spa relaxation making it an ideal summer destination.

Barèges is located at the foot of the “Col du Tormalet” and the “Pic Du Midi” and lines the banks of the Bastan River. Its starting points for summer hikes and walks is at “Tournaboup”, 4 km up the valley where you have access to the chair lifts that serve the summer hiking and walking itineraries. The pretty Plateau de Lienz is also served by a free shuttle bus and is a pristine area ideal for walks.

Barèges, although a famous spa town, did not come into existence the same way its peers. The discovery of the curative powers of the thermal waters of this area is not down to the Romans but rather the local shepherds who had lived and roamed the slopes of this mountainous terrain for centuries. The shepherds noticed that ill of injured sheep from their flock would instinctively lay in the sulphurous warm waters springs and that somehow this helped and healed them. However, it took two other events to really put Barèges on the map as a curative spa town. The first was in 1760 with the medical discovery of the curative effects of this water on bone illnesses. The second was the visit of Louis XIV to the spa in company of Madame de Maintenon and the Duke of Maine. From this moment onwards, “Curists” (those wishing to partake in a spa cure) flocked to the town and in 1734, construction began on the 14 year project to connect the town of Tarbes to Barèges by road.

The Tour de France has passed through but the Grand Tourmalet area many times during the summer, taking on the famous climb of the Col du Tourmalet.

With a reputation built upon the reputation of its waters, Barèges has retained its charm and authenticity and still today its stone and slate mountain shepherds' huts can be seen dotted around the area.

The evenings are especially mystical as you approach the restaurant on your last run of the day or via a small forest path through the woods.
The welcome at Louisette is a charming one whilst the smells from the kitchen hint at the rich and tasty local fare for which the restaurant is acclaimed. The most popular dish is the “l’assiette du skieur “(the skier’s plate) which consists of pan-fried ham, eggs and local potatoes).Specialties include; lamb, stuffed suckling pig, Gabure, and blueberry pie.
Discovery of black Bigorre pork cooked three ways: ham matured for 20 months, grilled belly pork and a terrine of pork with Genepi, or Crispy pig's trotter, deboned and stuffed with morels Louisette even offers homemade dishes canned to take away.

Laquette Restaurant

The Pic du Midi restaurant
www.picdumidi.com/restaurant/
With its unique view of the Pyrenees, the Pic du Midi has firmly placed itself on the gastronomic map - highlighting its expertise and local traditional food. Indeed, cooking altitude remains a significant difficulty: water boils at 92 ° and the flavour perception changes at altitude. Despite these difficulties, the manager of the Pic du Midi performs daily feats and offers an original menu highlighting the AOC and the regionally recognised products such as smoked trout from Lau-Balagnas, Tarbes beans, AOC Gavarnie/Barèges sheep, Pyrenean lamb, black pork sausages, local cheeses and wines exclusively from the region.
