Situated above the pretty village of Font Romeu lies the sunny mountain area (ski resort in the winter) of Font Romeu Pyrénées 2000. It is a typical mountain resort offering high altitude walks and hikes as well as mountain biking and road biking.
The resort extends from 1,950m to 2,250m and has some lift served walks to the nearby lakes.

Font Romeu is a small and lively family resort in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees just 19km from Perpignan. With its close proximity to Spain and Andorra, it is renowned for its sunny days and warm Catalan welcome. Its “Famille Plus Montagne” award means that it has been awarded by the French Ministry of Tourism’s seal of approval for being family friendly and supplying excellent facilities and services for families.

Located in the heart of the Natural Regional Park of the Catalan Pyrenees, at a height of 1800m it is close to Andorra and Spain. The charming old village of Font Romeu has a warm friendly, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and a rich history. The village of Font Romeu has two smaller parishes within its outer limits – the parish of Odeillo with its huge Heliodyssée Solar Centre and the parish of De Via. In 1822 these small parishes combined and became one community and in 1980 the extremities of Font Romeu reached Odeillo. In 2009 it all finally became one urban area with agricultural land and fields in between.

It was not until the early 1900’s that Font Romeu and its parishes became a tourist destination. The first chalets and hotel were built in 1924 whilst the first ski lift appeared in 1937. The Solar centre was constructed in 1962 and the Olympic site was inaugurated in 1967, 1 km north of the village centre. This establishment became the National High Altitude Training Centre and attracts athletes the world over. British athletes such as Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe train here and the latter is an ambassador for the area.

Font Romeu is a traditional mountain resort with a buzzing resort centre lined with shops, bars, restaurants and tea rooms. The area is very proud of its great Catalan and French food as well as the selection of excellent local wines. There is wine and cured meat tasting in the heart of town and excellent restaurants with views of the Catalan Pyrenees and over to Spain that will melt your heart.

The great thing about Font Romeu is that the cable car is located in the centre of town, just beside the tourist office, so it is literally a case of enjoy your breakfast and then jump on the cable car up to the mountain areas above – whether you are walking or hiking to visit the nearby lakes and peaks or mountain biking and taking the chairlifts and shuttle buses around the area, the nature and long sunny days in this area will be sure to blow your mind.

After a great day exploring and enjoying the sunshine and good food on or off the mountain, you can pop in to the Tourist Office and decide upon which fun activities you will try throughout your holiday. Font Romeu has every activity you could dream of for culture vultures, adrenalin junkies, nature lovers and children (see Activities tab).
