Why Cauterets?

  •  Elegant “Belle Epoque” style spa town
  • Great walking locations in the Natural Cirque du Lys and the “Pont D’Espagne”
  • Excellent Thermal spa, “Les Bains du Rocher”

The village of Cauterets is situated at the end of the Cauterets valley in the “Vallee des Gaves” (Valley of Rivers) area of the Hautes Pyrenees. , Located in the heart of region and just 30km from the famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes, it is the gateway to the Pyrenees National Park.

Surrounded by plentiful pine forests and icy streams that erupt from hot granite springs (55 ° C to be exact), it has been a famous spa town since the sixteenth century when Marguerite de Navarre, sister of Francis I, came with her court to take the waters. The arrival of a paved road in 1766 beckoned in the “Golden Age” of Cauterets, and the arrival of famous figures such as Chateaubriand, George Sand, Flaubert and Victor Hugo. The array of A-listers soon transformed the landscape and small village into a “Belle Époque” spa town with classical promenades, viewing points, open areas and stunning neo-classical architecture. It is said that the name Cauterets is made from two words meaning “Hot” and “cold” in the old dialect. One of the traditions in Cauterets is not only to “Take the waters” but also to try the fruit flavoured boiled sweets for which the town is famous. The “Berlingots” were given to children who had “taken the waters” to take away the unsavoury aftertaste of the mineral rich water.

The “Cirque Du Lys” is a natural cirque, located above the town of Cauterets and accessed by a 12 minute Gondola ride. This natural bowl extends from 1350 metres to 3250 metres and is great for walking or mountain biking. There are walking itineraries and the famous GR 10 walking route actually passes behind the cirque and takes in the nearby lake and refuge of Ileou. There is also a bike park and a chairlift serving the area.

The nearby “Pont D’Espagne” (Spanish Bridge) is located in the Pyrenees National Park and takes its name from the trade route between the two countries that used to pass via this area. It offers walking and hiking circuits in a stunning location.

Cauterets is a member of the “Kids Station” brand which strives to accommodate children as well as possible and to make Cauterets a great resort for families.

The friendly and helpful Cauterets Tourist Office is open every day during the summer season from 09:00 – 19:00. Their comprehensive website is full of useful information, tips and suggestions.
