Driving distance from Calais:
725 miles (Approx. 11hrs 30m)
The authentic mountain village of Les Angles, once a rural mountain village living off sheep farming and forestry, began to flounder after a rural exodus. The proud, Catalan Pyrenean village decided to embrace tourism and have not looked back since. The resort of Les Angles was created in 1964, though the village has been established for much, much longer.
The winter slopes of the ski resort are transformed into a hiker’s and biker’s paradise in the summer. From the lush green slopes, among the rich flora and fauna, there are beautiful picturesque views of its quaint Catalan churches and its surrounding forests and lakes. Why not take a mountain guide to show you how to forage before heading home with your bounty to cook up a hearty meal for family and friends?
The terrain around the resort lends itself perfectly to cycling and mountain biking. Forget the overcrowded Alpine MTB resorts and head to the Pyrenees where you get a feel for a more authentic French holiday. The Bike Park at Les Angles has everything you would expect of a first rate bike park: a good selection of runs for varied abilities, Northshore Zone and plenty of Enduro trails for those who like a challenge.
Road cyclists can enjoy the quiet, well maintained roads. The Col de Creu, Col de la Llose & Le Tour climb to the Port de Pailhères are all within pedalling distance. The area is a firm favourite with Tour de France rider Sylvain Chavanel – a testament to the terrain and temperate climate.
The pretty village of Les Angles is grouped around its typically Catalonian church and the 'Espace Bluneige' leisure centre, it is great for families. However, the town’s very lively Catalonian nights, in its selection of restaurants and bars, make it ideal for those looking for a great night life to toast your exertions.
Les Angles has a friendly, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and a rich history. The old town with its church as its crowning glory and it pretty central square is a pleasure to wander around and from here the road down to the summer paradise of Matemale Lake passes through dense pine forests.
In the heart of the Capcir forest, Matemale Lake is the epicentre for a host of activities for both the old and young. This is the place to go sailing in a dinghy, or windsurfing, taking a leisurely pedalo ride, kayaking and canoeing, or simply enjoying a swim in the crystal clear water (temperature between 19°C and 23°C in summer). There is also a multi-activity leisure area for adults and children, a challenging biathlon course and a tree-top adventure park which is great fun if you have a head for heights and a sense of balance! Of course, you could just head to the lake and relax by the water's edge and enjoy a picnic of local cheese on a crusty baguette washed down with a delicious bottle of wine!
Throughout the year, the resort hosts many major international sporting events and music festivals including:
Mountain bike downhill Coupe de France - French downhill mountain bike competition where riders take on the Mordor piste/run the toughest in the Bike Park. Normally held during the last weekend in June.
Lake Balcère fishing competition - a fishing competition taking place on the high altitude lake of Lake Balcère where rainbow trout, fresh water salmon and the famous Pyrenean brown trout can be fished. Normally held during the last weekend in July, during the Fete de Balcère (festival).

The ski area of Les Angles has two mountain restaurants for you to choose from.
Le Chalet
Located at the top of the cable car, 66210 Les Angles.
This mountain restaurant is a small mountain chalet straight out of a farytale. It offers guests a warm and cosy hideaway and a generous kitchen perfect for comfortable break whilst skiing. The self-service restaurant offers colourful homemade French and Catalan cuisine made using fresh and local ingredients, herbs and spices. The fare includes fresh pasta, grilled meats (over a wood fire) and of course, for those eating on the hoof, fresh sandwiches. This restaurant has a terrace and is connected to the cable car by a walkway meaning the joys of the mountain are well within reach for skiers and non-skiers alike.
Les Jassettes
Located at the top of the Jassette Express lift, 66210 Les Angles.
Ideally located at the top of the Jassettes Express chairlift (departs from the village) and at the base of the Roc D'Aude, the restaurant offers stunning views of the Capcir Plateau. Enjoy a break between runs at Jassettes Restaurant and relax over lunch in the dining room or enjoy the panoramic terrace overlooking Lake Matemale. You can pick up a light snack here as well as a gourmet break with traditional dishes concocted daily.
Restaurants
The town has a great selection of restaurants showcasing many different cuisines – rom Catalan cuisine to traditional French mountain dishes. There is also a large selection of fish and seafood due to the resort’s vicinity to the Mediterranean. Here are our top three - tried and tested restaurants.

Those with a huge appetite may be able to manage the grilled meat cuts!! There are also set menus and plates of the day as well as the house’s home-made pâtés. The outdoor terrace overlooks the green beginner’s slope and area – so whilst the kids enjoy learning to ski you can enjoy a great meal in the sunshine. In the evening the restaurant also has a cosy bar area for after dinner drinks.
La Fondue
