Inside there are many figurative drawings depicting animals made using crushed iron oxide and manganese. The cave is open to the public but only upon reservation due to limited space. The ski resort of Saint Lary Soulan is situated in the Hautes Pyrenees department, in the Midi Pyrenees. The ski resort, which lies at a height of 1650 meters, opened in 1957. In 1963, the municipalities of Saint-Lary Soulan merge to increase the ski area. Throughout the years there has been a lot of investment in the ski area with high speed lifts, new slope development, increased snow cannons coverage and on improved on-slope facilities.
Above the village of Saint Lary lies the ski resort of Saint Lary Soulan. The ski area extends from 1650 metres to 2515 metres with 100 km of lift served runs. The resort also features one snow park and has 275 strategically placed snow canons to ensure great snow coverage at all times.
The ski area caters for all levels of skiers, with beautiful green and blue pistes, moguls slaloms and a great snow park along with a huge variety of red pistes for intermediates to cruise. The resort installed two new lifts for the 2006-07 Season including the six seater Adet chair which replaces the previous drag lift.
The ski area is split into three distinct areas – Saint Lary 1700 – Pla d’Adet, Saint Lary 1900 – Espiaube and Saint Lary 2400 – Vallon du Portet.
There are roads and two cable cars leading up to the linked zones or areas of “La Cabane”, “Pla d'Adet” and “Espiaule” and a regular free local shuttle bus connects these areas.
The ski area can be accessed by a mountain road which takes the famous Pla D’Adet route used in the the Tour de France.
A shuttle bus runs from the town centre, visiting both Saint lary 1900 and Saint Lary 1700 areas (see below for more details).
Leave your bags and ski equipment at the secure store at the foot of the pistes.

Saint Lary is an internationally renowned winter sports resort with something to please everyone and slopes set over different altitudes and orientations meaning good snow and the ability to ski in the sun the whole day.
Saint Lary Soulan has plenty to offer progressive beginners and intermediate skiers with a heavy emphasis on blue graded runs. It's a great resort for those who appreciate an even mix of enjoyable runs from scenic cruising blue runs to the more challenging red runs. There is also a good proportion of steeper blacks for those looking for an adrenaline shot.
The area has three distinct linked sectors: Saint-Lary 1700 (Pla d'Adet), Saint-Lary 1900 (Espiaube) and Saint-Lary 2400 (Vallon du Portet).
Saint-Lary 1700 is accessed via the Telecabine gondola and the Pic Lumiere cable car from the village centre in the valley and is dedicated to family skiing. This area is where you will find the Kidipark (6-12 year olds) and nursery slopes along with a tobaggan run. There is also a selection of restaurant and bars here along with slopeside accommodation.
Saint-Lary 1900 is a connecting sector for 1700 and 2400 and it also has one of the longest pistes in the French Pyrenees - Mirabelle. This famous run goes on for 3.6km with a vertical drop of 700m and is names after the 1968 Olympic Women's Downhill silver medalist Isabelle Mir! There's a good mix of runs along with a stade slalom, snow shoe trails and toboggan runs.
Finally, Saint-Lary 2400 is where you will find some of the more challenging runs as the altitude increases and the slopes steepen. You will also find the Snowpark here with its selection of jibs, jumps and rails. That's not to say 2400 is for high intermediates and experts only. You will also find a good selection of reds and blues and some gentle greens which makes it a great place for progressive beginners to explore.
All three sectors have a selection of mountain restaurants at your service when you feel the need to refuel.
There are roads and two cable cars leading up to the linked areas of “La Cabane”, “Pla d'Adet” and “Espiaule” and a regular free local shuttle bus connects these areas.
The ski area can be accessed by a mountain road which takes the famous Pla D’Adet route used in the the Tour de France.
A dedicated beginner’s area is situated at Saint Lary 1700 – Pla d’Adet and comprises of a childrens ski park 'Kidpark', 1 magic carpet and 3 drag lifts (Ludette, Garlitz and Cabane) and one chair lift (L'Adet).
Once you’ve got to grips with your technique and mastered the beginner’s area and you feel ready to take on your first green piste, the best option is to take the Ludette lift to the top of the Ludette run. The Echarpe is a good long green run to practice your technique and runs from the nursery slopes to the bottom of the Cabane lift. Here you can either jump on the ski bus back to the nursery area or progress onto your first blues at the top of the Cabane lift.
When you are ready to face the next challenge of your first blue run, the best place to head are the blue runs sitauted above the Plat d'Adet beginners area. Head to the top of the Cabane lift or alternatively take the Ludette followed by the Garlitz lift. The runs, Garlitz, Mickeys and Desman all have the option to bring you back to the Plat d'Adet area.
The high speed Bouleaux lift will ensure that you get the maximum amount of time to practice your technique on the long and lazy pistes of Tetras and Bouleaux. It also connects to the Balcon de Cabane run which will return you to the Plat d'Adet area.
For those who enjoy pistes with a view, head over to the 1900 area and take the Mouscades followed by the Soumaye lift up to an altitude of 2370m just below the Soumaye peak. From here you will get an amazing panorama. From here take either the blue run of Peyramede or Combes d'Aulon followed by the Tortes run down to the bottom of the Saint Lary 1900 area.
The Saint Lary 2400 area is well suited to intermediate skiers with a good selection of blue and red runs. There is also a long connecting blue run from the top of the Tourette lift within Saint Lary 2400 down to the Saint Lary 1900 area. The run starts out as the Balcon Mouscades and winds its way down the ridge into the valley passing through a tunnel under the famous Mirabelle piste emerging the other side under the Soumaye lift and then descending all the way into the bottom on the blue Tortes piste. If this is too much of a leg burner, why not stop for a rest on the piste and take in some of the stunning vistas.
There are a good proportion of red-graded runs, providing an attainable, confidence-building upgrade path for those who are ready to graduate from the long blue cruisers. Head over to the Saint Lary 2400 area to try the long, winding blue and red descents with their stunning vistas from summits like Pichaleye (2515m) and Lac de Cap de Long (2450m).
More advanced intermediate skiers can really enjoy the scenic runs from Cap de Long and Pichaleye and take advantage of the safe areas between them to perfect their powder technique after fresh snow fall.
The Corneblanque or the Bastan red from the top of the Cap de Long are great after a dump of fresh powder. After making your way down through the gladed runs you connect into the red L'Oule run named after the lake of the same name. From here you are afforded great views of the lake below and there is also a restaurant where you can stop for a snack.
Saint Lary offers some great runs for experts.
In the Plat d'Adet sector you can pitch yourself against the Carrots black run to warm up the legs at the top of the Soum de Matte chair. At 2060m you also get some great views from the top of the run as a reward for the efforts to come!
The Bassia black, served by the Soum de Matte and Bassia draglifts is a steep challenge that traverses a ridge before dropping into a couloir. Not for the faint-hearted.
From the top of the Cap de Long in Saint Lary 2400 you can tackle the Balcon de l'Oule black which is partially gladed and finishes at the view point for the lake by the same name. There is also a mountain restaurant where you can stop for a snack.
The Isards drag offers up more black run challenges in the shape of the Lagopede and Oussadet. From here you can connect into the Saint Lary 1900 area down the red Isard run followed by the black of either the Terranere or the Adret to the bottom of the Tortes chair. At the top of the Tortes chair you have the Sarrats black which is somewhat challenging as it is normally unpisted!
There are also numerous off-piste opportunities for the more adventurous.
For those that like to experiment with the off piste, Saint Lary is actually quite ineresting for lift-served off piste. When the snow and conditions are good there are numerous wide expanses of off-piste between the groomed pistes which is often untracked.
For the more adventurous who like a hike there is the run down to Aulon and the Corneblanque and Pichaleye couloirs. For the run down to Aulon you will need some form of transport to return to the ski area. Please be aware that this is outside the ski area and is therefore not covered by insurance and we always advise to consult and use qualified guides.
Saint Lary 1900 features a Stade de Slalom which is served by the Soumaye chair.
Snowboarders will be pleased by the steepness of the resort in all of the three sectors. There are many freeride opportunities with tree line runs and wide expanses of off-piste.
There is also a snowpark which is designed and sponsored by the Delerue brothers who have all competed for France at the Olymipcs. The park is situated by the side of the Combe Saboures blue run and features a freestyle area and three progressive zones from beginners to experts.
The park has numerous jumps, jibs and rails and the sound system ensures that you remain entertained as you practice your 180s and 360s.
There's also a Livepark area where you can record your tricks and share them with friends on the web. The “Livepark” concept allows you to access the park and using a sticker with an electronic chip inside it via which you can record your exploits and best performances from the day. Saint Lary was the first resort to use Livepark and it is completely free to use.
Walkers and non-skiers will find marked snow shoe trails in all the sectors on the mountain. The Cabanes trail connects the Saint Lary 1700 sector with that of Saint Lary 1900 via a 3km trail through the forest at the foot of the slopes. There are also walking circuits around Lake Oule. Please refer to the Activities section for further details and guides.
The cross country ski trails are located in the Saint Lary 2400 sector at the top of the Portet gondola and Tourette chair. The Piste du Col trail on the plateau above the Col du Portet is 3km in length.
