Barèges, located at 1,250m, is an authentic Pyrenean village within “Le Domaine Du Grand Tourmalet”, the Pyrenees’ largest ski area. A small and intimate village with the river Bastan running through it, its reputation is built upon the healing powers of its waters. Today Barèges combines excellent skiing (5 minute bus ride) and healing spa relaxation making it an ideal winter sports destination.

Barèges is part of the Domaine du Tourmalet ski area and is itself located in the municipalities of Campan, Bagneres-de-Bigorre Barèges. It is located at the foot of the “Col du Tormalet” and the “Pic Du Midi” and lines the banks of the Bastan River. Its ski lift base is located at “Tournaboup”, 4 km up the valley whilst its Nordic ski area called and served by a free ski bus. There is a free shuttle bus that serves “Tournaboup” (access to “Grand Tourmalet” ski area) and the “Plateaux de Lienz” section of the ski resort - a pristine are ideal for snow shoe outings.

“Grand Tourmalet” is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees with 69 ski runs and 43 ski lifts. It lies between 1,400 and 2,500 meters above sea level and straddles the famous Col du Tourmalet with modern purpose built resort of La Mongie on the other side. Barèges is on the western side of the col, La Mongie on the eastern side.

Barèges, although a famous spa town, did not come into existence the same way its peers. The discovery of the curative powers of the thermal waters of this area is not down to the Romans but rather the local shepherds who had lived and roamed the slopes of this mountainous terrain for centuries. The shepherds noticed that ill of injured sheep from their flock would instinctively lay in the sulphurous warm waters springs and that somehow this helped and healed them. However, it took two other events to really put Barèges on the map as a curative spa town. The first was in 1760 with the medical discovery of the curative effects of this water on bone illnesses. The second was the visit of Louis XIV to the spa in company of Madame de Maintenon and the Duke of Maine. From this moment onwards, “Curists” (those wishing to partake in a spa cure) flocked to the town and in 1734, construction began on the 14 year project to connect the town of Tarbes to Barèges by road.

Barèges is the second oldest ski resort in France and the pioneer of skiing in the Pyrenees. In 1921, Barèges already had a ski school and by 1936 was the proud owner of the first ski lift in the Hautes-Pyrenees. This was the “Pic de L’Ayre Funicular” – which is no longer in use but used to connect the centre of town to the Plateau de Lienz and above, (Today a Nordic ski area). La Mongie as a ski resort was started from scratch with only a few modest shacks whilst Barèges already had a hotel infrastructure. The two ski resorts were connected together in 1975 and finally fused together to create the ski area of “Grand Tourmalet” in the year 2000.  In 1985, the ski area played host to the World Cup, featuring an alpine skiing slalom.

The Tour de France has passed through but the ski area many times during the summer, but Grand Tourmalet is a skiing landmark of the French Pyrenees and boasts champions such as, Mathieu Crepel (Double Snowboarding World Champion in Big Air and Half Pipe).

With a reputation built upon the reputation of its waters, Barèges has retained its charm and authenticity and still today its stone and slate mountain shepherds' huts can be seen dotted around the area.

Cielio Thermal Spa

www.cieleo-bareges.com.
Discover this unique and luminous centre of well-being and indulge in the regenerating effects of the famous healing water of Barèges. Located at a height where the air is clean and fresh and the mountains can almost be touched. The spa is nestled under two large domes: the lagoon style pool is sheltered by the first, a bluish dome dotted with stars – perhaps in homage to the nearby observatory of Le Pic Du Midi? The other a glass dome that welcomes in the mountain vistas outside whilst you while away the day in the Jacuzzi.  The main pool has geysers, bubbling bench, jets and a Jacuzzi which all help to massage away the aches of a tough ski day whilst fun showers, saunas and steam rooms help to relax you. Spa treatments include baths, aero-baths, jet showers, underwater massage and massages with essential oils, mud wraps and facials.

The Science: The thermal waters of Barèges are well known for their therapeutic effect especially on bone reconstruction, rheumatism and the respiratory tract. The sulphide and sodium act as anti-inflammatories and the warm temperature (42 °) help the waters retain these essential healing properties in a natural state.

Opening Times: Daily, 10:00 – 12:00 & 15:00 – 20.00 (French school holidays); 16:00 – 20.00 (all other dates).

Pic Du Midi

The Pic du Midi was classified as a national nature site in 2003 and now offers day, evening and night options to take your breath away at any time of day!

The most beautiful view of the Pyrenees is most definitely from the Pic Du midi station. Accessed by two cable car rides (an experience in itself) that take you from Barèges at 1,800m to a grand height of 2,877 meters in just 15 minutes – this is a panorama not be missed. The magnificent snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees await you as you alight at an altitude where the air is just that little bit thinner and where birds fly below you.  The panoramic terraces showcase the exceptional environment of high mountains whilst the museum (the highest museum in Europe) presents the history of the human endeavour to create this magical place ... A gift shop is also available for mementos and regional gifts.

There is also an onsite restaurant which is literally “above the clouds” and offers traditional cuisine made with local produce. The menus are prepared with quality ingredients and AOC labelled products are highlighted in all the dishes. There is also a good selection wines from the region!

Return journey: 36€ /Adult ; 23€/Child-12 years; 92€/Family 2 ad + 2 ch – 18 years.

A Night at the Pic du Midi

This is an exceptional and unforgettable way to spend an evening. Spend a night up on the Pic du Midi and plunge yourself into the atmosphere of the pioneers of the Peak and stay in the (newly furnished) original old rooms of the Observatory. Experiencing the night as black as pitch as you wander around and explore the Observatory and museum (reminiscent of “A night at the Museum” with Ben Stiller!) There is a full program for the evening which involves talks by the onsite astrologer ranging from the history of the station to the history of the universe (in French but English translations are kindly given on request). Enjoying a traditional Bigorre meal (3 courses with wine) and visit the scientific areas. There is also the chance to view the stars, planets and moon using the high powered telescopes (weather permitting). Not to be missed is the breath-taking panorama of the whole of the Pyrenean mountain range as sun rises over this part of the world. I do not think there is a panorama to match that one! Astronomy enthusiasts will be in their element as will photographers who love a breath-taking sunrise in a mystical setting!

Nights at the Summit are available throughout the year. The Starry Nights: Discover the stars as you've never seen! Sunset, animations, traditional meal ... Magic!

• Sunrise over the Pyrenees

SKI INFO

The ski resort of Barèges (Grand Tourmalet) is situated in the Hautes-Pyrénées department, in the Midi-Pyrénées. The ski resort, which lies at a height of 1,250 meters, first came into existence in 1936 when the “Pic de L’Ayre Funicular” lift was built. The combined ski area of Grand Tourmalet was created in 1973.

The ski resort of Barèges combined with the neighbouring resort of La Mongie is part of the largest ski area in the Pyrenees - Le Domaine du Grand Tourmalet. On one side of the Grand Tourmalet peak is the modern ski resort of La Mongie and on the other side is the small village resort of Barèges. The whole ski area has 100 kms of slopes and 34 lifts as well as 14 km marked cross country trails in Barèges.

The two sides of the ski resort are easily accessed from each other and also feature a snow park and have 240 strategically placed snow canons to ensure great snow coverage throughout the ski season.  The high level of sporting activity in the Grand Tourmalet ski area is recognised by many sporting professionals and the area hosts many international events each year. Mathieu Crepel, World Snowboarding Champion of 2007 is one of the resort’s successes.

100km of slope coverage; 70 slopes: 22 green, 20 blue, 22 red & 6 black; 34 lifts: 1 cable car, 14 chair lifts, 15 drag lifts and 4 magic carpets, representing 32km of lifts (flow : 45 000 skiers/hour); 170 snow cannons; heated picnic room; 5 high-altitude restaurants; luge slope; 1 snow park; for free riders: 1500m of difference in height at the Pic du Midi for a long and fabulous downhill glide; cross-country skiing: 14km of marked trails in Barèges & 2 km in La Mongie.

The ski area is split into two distinct areas – the La Mongie side and the Barèges side.

Resort Shuttle Ski bus in Barèges

A free shuttle bus service operates around the resort starting at the Tourist Office. During the school holidays it operates from approximately 08:30 to 20:00 every 15 minutes and then every half an hour until 21:45.

Ski Area

KM: 100
SKI LIFTS: 34 (1 cable car, 14 chair lifts,  15 drag lifts, 4 magic carpets)
SLOPES: 70 (Green Runs: 22, Blue Runs: 20, Red Runs: 22, Black Runs: 6)
SNOW CANNONS: 240 (25% off the ski area)
SNOW PARKS: 1 (boarder cross, tables, big air, rails)

The Domaine du Grand Tourmalet is a two-sided ski area composed of La Mongie to the East and Barèges to the West. You won't be able to get round it all. It may seem like a very bold promise, but not so fast! The Domaine du Tourmalet is the largest skiable region in the French Pyrenees! With 100km of skiing, 69 ski slopes (the largest amount in the French Pyrenees), 2 snow-parks, 39 ski lifts and an altitude up to 2500m this is the ideal ski resort for all abilities of skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, free-ride and snowshoeing.

This ski area provides an excellent combination of vast open bowls, tree lined runs, accessible nursery slopes, nice broad and long cruising blue slopes and the high mountain moon-like Quattre Termes blue run, challenging red runs, some of the steepest black runs and some exceptional off-piste. It even hosted the Downhill World Skiing Championships in 1986!

The Skiing

Beginners

There are two beginners' areas in Grand Tourmalet. La Mongie has 13 slopes, 1 chairlift, 10 drag lifts and 1 magic carpet. Barèges has 5 slopes, 2 drag lifts, 1 chair lift and 3 magic carpets.

Once you’ve got to grips with your technique and mastered the beginner’s area and you feel ready to take on your first green piste, the best option is to take the “Turon” lift up the small and gentle slopes called “Flocon” and “Turon” that run alongside the lift.

When you are ready to face the next challenge of your first blue run, the best place to head is the “Sud Tourmalet Est” sector which has the best selection of blues. The “Espade” lift accesses the “Dahus”, “Renard” and “Isard” runs all lead down from here near enough underneath the lift line and this area will ensure that you get the maximum amount of time to practice your technique.

Intermediates

The ski area of la Mongie is well suited to intermediates thanks to its open bowl skiing. There are a good proportion of red-graded runs, providing an attainable, confidence-building upgrade path for those who are ready to graduate from the long blue cruisers. Try the “Nord” sector with its compact selection of red runs such as “Goril”, “Pain de sucre”, “Chamois” and “Croupe” - with their stunning vistas across the valley and up to Pic Du midi on the other side.

The “Tourmalet Ouest” sector is well suited to intermediate skiers with a good selection of blue and red runs. There is also the “Lienz” sector where you can find more challenging tree lined ski runs – excellent during a snowy or windy day when the trees provide protection from the elements.

The “L’Ayre” run on the Barèges side of the ski area takes you through pine forests which open up from time to time to reveal beautiful scenic views. A magical run has been used during the European championships held here.

Why not take the first lift up with one of the “Pisteurs” (staff responsible for the ski area) and see the ski area before anyone else and it will give you an insight into the life of a “Pisteur”. You will get first dibs on the runs and maybe even enjoy some fresh powder.  Free of charge with a valid lift pass.

More advanced intermediate skiers can take the “Caobere” drag lift in the “Tourmalet Ouest” sector and take on the “Campana” or “Rhodos” runs where the can really perfect their powder technique after a dump of snow.

Experts

For experts, the Grand Tourmalet has reinforced its reputation as the sporting level and opened black piste number six last winter. Many skiers were tempted by this beautiful snow slope visible from the starting point of Barèges-Tournaboup. The area has been secured, has a 550 m vertical and is 1.6 km long. It is accessible directly from the “Caoubère” chairlift.

Take the “Prade Verde” chairlift and from the top there are four different black runs, which are the steepest in the area. None are groomed and have moguls at the top. In most places they are wide, giving you the option to avoid the steepest parts by crossing the run from one end to the other.

For expert skiers, the resort is also famed for its off-piste and has access to the Pic du Midi (2877m), an entirely un-pisted mountain that attracts World Cup Free ride competitions. (See Below)

Off-piste

The resort is also famed for its off-piste and has access to the Pic du Midi (2877m), an entirely un-pisted mountain run that attracts World Cup Free ride competitions. With a 1500m drop, the extraordinary off-piste of The Tourmalet Pass, around The Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the valley of Campan Payolle and Bagneres is not to be missed!

For expert skiers, the resort is also famed for its off-piste and has access to the Pic du Midi (2877m), an entirely un-pisted mountain that attracts World Cup Free ride competitions. (See Below)

Pic Du midi Free-ride (Unlimited)
Since winter 2013/2014, both sections of the ascent to Pic Du midi (La Mongie  - Taoulet and  Taoulet - Pic du Midi) are open to advanced skiers. At almost 3000 meters above sea level, the summit of the Pic du Midi and its slopes are accessible to downhill free-ride.

There are a selection of routes to choose from however, this is a high mountain area and runs are unsupervised, unmarked and undeveloped – so hiring a ski instructor for the morning/afternoon or day is a good option.

The two sections of the Pic du Midi cable car give access to an area classified as a high mountain area. Exit the red track "Jupiter" located under the “Taoulet” cable car and its barrier. This area will not be marked nor secure nor groomed. From the intermediate station of the “Taoulet” cable car at 2,341m, the "Yellow", "Green" or "Violette" routes feed into the Pic du Midi routes.

From the top station of Pic Du Midi at 2.877m, these mains descent routes are possible:

La Mongie side to Artigues-Campan: This route of "Coume Peak" has a vertical drop of 1,700m over a downhill distance of 10kml. A free shuttle can be reserved to take skiers from Artigues back to La Mongie.
Barèges side to the Tourmalet chairlift: Pic du Midi lift passes include the return journey on this ski lift.

Free ride routes from the Pic du Midi, as well as off-piste routes from the Tourmalet cable car station are available on the topographic map on sale at the Pic du Midi shop for around € 20.

Note: To make the most of these routes, we recommend that you ski/board with a qualified guide. (See our list of qualified guides below).

Free Style Park
For those that fancy a little bit of free style skiing, trying the “le Park des Étoiles” which offers 5 different courses of differing difficulty.

Mini – Cross: Follows a set rhythm with some turns and bumps in it.
The Blue course: Good fun and adapted for those who wish to try out freestyle skiing for the first time in safety.
The Red course: a little more difficult with a set rhythm but more turns and bumps
Le Boarder cross; will give you the real feeling of freestyle skiing. Turn to the left, whoops, turn to the right, whoops….and whoops again!!!
The Black course: a terrain where all good free riders can express themselves and show their form!

N’PY moov is all the rage in La Mongie. The prepared piste is crafted with tight bends and hill rolls that make for a fun and games on a secure run.

Snowboarders

The 2 snow-parks have Boarder cross, tables, big air, rails and a leisure area open to all abilities.

Cross country skiing in Plateau du Lienz

This Nordic area of “Plateau du Lienz” is located in the most easterly part of the ski area just above Barèges. It is just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of town and can be reached using the local shuttle buses for a fare of 2€. This peaceful location is a great location to explore nature on cross country skis. There are 18 km of cross country routes that lead into the forest
